BIOGRAPHY
Singer-songwriter Rachel Schain knows you’re happy. But are you happy happy? Such is the inspiration for her upcoming self-released E.P., entitled
Happy Happy.
“This E.P. explores the concept of fleeting joy versus lasting happiness,” says Schain of her debut release. “There are a lot of things that are going to seem like they’re the right path when you’re taking them because they make you happy right then and there, but you’re going to have to go back to reality sooner or later.” The E.P. was inspired by an art installation by Choi Jeong-Hwa, also entitled Happy Happy. “At first glance it’s a beautiful plastic playground, but when you get down to the elements of the piece it’s just plastic junk which won’t last long and will eventually pollute our planet in landfills. That’s not real happiness.”
The interplay between short- and long-term happiness is felt on all of the tracks of the record, including “The Way I Love You,” a deeply personal tune about her development as an artist. “This song really embodies the theme of Happy Happy more than any other. I spent a long time being everyone else’s biggest fan and putting all my energy into their happiness, which left none for myself. This song came out of realizing that if I put that energy into my own projects, I’d be a lot happier as a person.”
It was this realization that motivated Rachel to start recording and performing her own music nearly three years ago. While she has been deeply involved in many aspects of the music industry for over ten years, from promotions to being an on-air talent for a Long Island radio station to avidly supporting other local and international artists, performing has now become the heart of her efforts, culminating in the release of Happy Happy this summer.
Happy Happy also features “Not My Place,” a snarky smackdown from a jilted lover, and fan favorite anthem for the under-appreciated “Rockstar, Bitch!” “Sometimes you just have to remind yourself that you’re bound for bigger and better things.” Rachel Schain is a passionate, talented performer drawing comparisons to Tori Amos, Joni Mitchell, and Dar Williams. She began taking voice lessons at age 12 and then studied voice at Binghamton University. The result is the music magic you hear today. In addition to the three artists listed above, Rachel also counts Blues Traveler, Kate Miller-Heidke, Ben Folds, Rufus Wainwright, Elvis Costello, and OK Go as her greatest musical influences. Rachel lives in Delaware with her husband and two adorable pets. She is a regular at local and regional venues, such as the Bellefonte Café (Wilmington), Mojo 13 (Wilmington), Lickety Split (Philadelphia), and Ottobar
(Baltimore).
Happy Happy is due out this August. This fall, she is planning a short Northeast US tour across NY, NJ, DC, PA, CT, and MA in support of Happy Happy.
